BOX ELDER, S.D. – Douglas High School students were dismissed early Tuesday after a potential gas leak prompted school officials to evacuate the building as a precaution.
According to the Douglas School District, students and staff were initially moved to the stadium while crews responded to the situation. Officials later shut off gas service and reported there was no ongoing safety threat to other school buildings or the surrounding community.
Students who drove themselves to school or walked were allowed to leave on their own. Students who ride the bus were directed to wait at Douglas Middle School.
Parents picking up students were asked to go to Vandenberg Elementary School on Briggs Street.
School officials emphasized that the early dismissal affected only Douglas High School. All other schools in the district continued normal operations.
