PIERRE, S.D. –More than 30 South Dakota organizations and businesses are urging Governor Larry Rhoden to enroll the state in a federal program that helps low-income families buy groceries during the summer.
The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer, or Summer EBT program, provides eligible families with $120 per child to help cover food costs when school is out of session. Supporters say South Dakota could receive nearly $7 million in federal funding and help as many as 57,000 children.
South Dakota is currently one of just 11 states not participating in the program. Advocates argue the assistance would help combat childhood hunger, especially in communities where summer meal programs may not be easily accessible.
State officials say they are reviewing the program but remain concerned about startup and administrative costs, which could require additional staffing and technology upgrades.
The state must decide by January 1 whether it will participate in the program for the summer of 2027.
