Instead of visiting a pumpkin patch, dozens of Rapid City children spent Saturday picking pumpkins from a swimming pool.
The fourth annual Pumpkin Plunge at the Roosevelt Swim Center drew 77 young participants, who swam among floating pumpkins before selecting one to take home and decorate.
Hosted by Rapid City Parks and Recreation, the event offers a unique fall activity that isn’t affected by South Dakota’s unpredictable autumn weather. Officials say the program remains one of the department’s most popular seasonal events, with all registration spots filling within a week of opening last month.
Parks staff cleaned each pumpkin before the event to protect water quality, while lifeguards and volunteers helped ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for families.
Participants can also enter their decorated pumpkins into an online contest. Photos will be posted on the Rapid City Parks and Recreation Facebook page, where the public can vote for their favorites. Winners will receive free swim punch passes.
Parks officials say they plan to bring the Pumpkin Plunge back next year.
