RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City residents are being asked to help preserve the city’s history by sharing old photographs as part of a new community project.
The Rapid City Historic Preservation Commission and The Journey Museum will host a “Picture Our Past” event on November 8 from 2 to 4 p.m. at The Journey Museum.
Organizers are inviting the public to bring up to three historic photos that are at least 50 years old and feature Rapid City homes, buildings, businesses, signs, neighborhoods or other local landmarks from 1976 or earlier.
The photos will be scanned at the event and immediately returned to their owners. Digital copies will be added to The Journey Museum’s collections and included in an interactive online map highlighting Rapid City’s history.
City officials say family photo albums often contain important pieces of local history that may not exist in traditional archives.
The event is part of Rapid City’s ongoing celebration of the city’s 150th anniversary, and organizers hope residents will help preserve the stories and images that shaped the community.
