SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Police Department says its investigation into an alleged assault near the Lions Park recreation path remains active.
Police first responded to the reported assault of a female victim on September 4th at about 11:30 in the morning. Authorities say the suspect is a man, but no additional identifying information has been released.
Police Chief Collin Smith says investigators are withholding details about the suspect and the nature of the alleged attack to protect the integrity of the investigation and the privacy of the victim.
Smith says the incident has raised understandable concerns among residents who use the recreation path, but emphasized that public safety remains the department’s top priority. He says officers continue to actively investigate the case while maintaining routine monitoring of the city’s trail system.
The Spearfish Police Department is working with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office to follow up on available leads. Officials say the incident appears isolated, and the area remains open to the public.
Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact Detective Sam Funk at the Spearfish Police Department.
