RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Rapid City Police Department is launching a new safety and education campaign aimed at riders of electric bikes, scooters, and motorcycles.
The effort comes after residents and officers reported an increase in unsafe riding behaviors across the city, including speeding on sidewalks and bike paths, failing to yield to pedestrians, and ignoring traffic signals.
Police say the popularity of electric transportation has grown rapidly, especially among younger riders. As a result, officers will focus first on education and warnings when dealing with juveniles. That approach may include safety guidance and notifying parents when necessary.
The department is reminding riders that e-bikes and similar vehicles must follow traffic laws, obey signals and signs, yield to pedestrians, and operate at safe speeds. Riders are also encouraged to wear helmets and use lights or reflectors when visibility is limited.
While education is the primary goal, police say officers will issue citations for serious or repeated violations that put public safety at risk.
Residents can find more information on e-bike and scooter regulations on the Rapid City Police Department website or report ongoing safety concerns through the department’s non-emergency dispatch line.
