RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City officials are reminding residents that there is still time to provide feedback on a proposed ordinance amendment that would establish additional regulations for data centers within the city.
The City’s Community Development Department is accepting comments through an online survey available on the City of Rapid City website. The deadline for public input is November 2. Residents can also review presentation materials, handouts, and other information from the public open house held October 14 before submitting comments.
The proposed amendment would build on an ordinance approved by the Rapid City Common Council in December 2024 that defined data centers and allowed them as a permitted use in light industrial and heavy industrial districts.
New provisions under consideration would address issues including required distances from residential areas, power, water, and sewer usage, and standards for noise and vibration designed to lessen potential impacts on neighboring properties.
The Rapid City Planning Commission postponed action on the proposal at its September 10 meeting and is scheduled to resume its review of the ordinance amendment on November 5, following the public comment period.
