RAPID CITY, S.D. – The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will make a special stop in Custer next month as it travels from Idaho to Washington, D.C.
The Custer Area Chamber of Commerce is planning a community celebration on November 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Way Park in downtown Custer. Organizers say the family-friendly event will feature appearances by Santa Claus and Smokey Bear, along with educational exhibits and commemorative merchandise.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to sign a banner that will accompany the Capitol Christmas Tree on its journey to the nation’s capital.
As part of the celebration, local law enforcement, fire department, and U.S. Forest Service vehicles are expected to escort the tree into town in a mini parade. Additional details on the route will be announced closer to the event.
The Capitol Christmas Tree will ultimately be displayed on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The annual tradition has continued for more than 50 years, with a different national forest selected each year to provide the tree.
Organizers say the Custer stop offers residents and visitors a unique opportunity to participate in a national holiday tradition while celebrating the Black Hills’ connection to America’s public lands and forests.
