RAPID CITY, S.D. – A South Dakota conservation group has been awarded nearly $8 million in federal funding to restore grasslands while supporting livestock producers across the state.
The Second Century Habitat Fund received a $7.98 million grant through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Regional Conservation Partnership Program. The funding will support the Working Lands Grassland Recovery Initiative, one of 42 projects selected nationwide.
The program aims to convert 7,500 acres of marginal cropland into perennial grasslands through voluntary 10-year agreements with landowners. Organizers say the restored land will remain available for managed grazing and hay production while also improving wildlife habitat.
Officials say the project will help reduce soil erosion, improve soil health and increase water infiltration. The effort will be carried out in partnership with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks.
Eligible landowners and agricultural producers may receive assistance with land preparation, seed purchases, planting costs and rental payments during the early years of participation.
Program leaders say applications will be reviewed competitively, with priority given to projects offering strong conservation benefits and connections to existing grasslands. The initiative is expected to launch soon, with more information available through the Second Century Habitat Fund.
