RAPID CITY, S.D. – A Rapid City teenager is facing multiple charges after reports of gunfire prompted a large law enforcement response Monday afternoon.
Police were called shortly before 2 p.m. to the 3900 block of Elm Avenue after receiving reports of an armed individual. While officers were responding, witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the area.
Authorities say multiple law enforcement agencies quickly converged on the neighborhood and located the suspect hiding in a residential backyard in the 3600 block of Elm Avenue. The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Dylan Mickey of Rapid City, was found in possession of a loaded AR-15-style rifle and was taken into custody without incident.
Investigators determined Mickey was impaired at the time of the incident. He was arrested on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, underage consumption of alcohol, and threatening law enforcement.
The investigation remains ongoing. Police are asking residents in the area to review security camera footage from between 1:30 and 2 p.m. Monday and report any suspicious activity. Authorities say numerous local, state, and federal agencies assisted in the response.
