RAPID CITY, S.D. – The holiday season is beginning to take shape in Rapid City as Parks Department crews prepare Wilson Park for the city’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
Crews will spend Tuesday decorating the Mayor’s Tree and surrounding shrubs with more than 6,000 lights ahead of the 18th annual Wilson Park Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, scheduled for November 24 at 5:30 p.m.
Organizers say the event traditionally marks the start of the holiday shopping season in Rapid City. This year’s celebration also carries added significance as the nation observes its 250th anniversary and Rapid City celebrates its 150th anniversary.
The Mount Rushmore Road Group notes that Wilson Park has its own historic connection to the community, having been developed during President Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal-era Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps programs.
In addition to decorating Wilson Park, city crews will be working throughout Rapid City this week, installing holiday decorations in other areas as preparations continue for the Christmas season.
