PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota voters have elected Catherine Barranco as the state’s next auditor, completing a campaign that began after the death of her husband, former candidate David Barranco.
As of 11 p.m. on Election Night, Barranco had received 63 percent of the vote, defeating Democratic candidate Tom Cool, who had 37 percent, with most precincts reporting statewide.
Barranco was endorsed earlier this year by term-limited State Auditor Rich Sattgast after taking over the Republican nomination originally held by her late husband. David Barranco, a former Sioux Falls City Council member, died of colorectal cancer in July and had encouraged his wife to continue the campaign.
Speaking on Election Night, Barranco said the victory brought the family’s journey full circle and credited her husband’s support and encouragement.
With her election, Barranco will become the first woman to serve as South Dakota State Auditor in more than 50 years.
