PIERRE, S.D. – With all precincts reporting and results remaining unofficial until certification, voters have selected their representatives in several western South Dakota State House districts.
In District 27, Republican Liz May easily claimed one of the two seats with nearly 65 percent of the vote. Independent Joe Flood secured the second seat, finishing ahead of three other independent candidates.
District 30 voters sent both Republican incumbents back to Pierre. Trish Ladner and Tim Goodwin narrowly edged Democrat Bret Swanson to win the district’s two House seats.
One of the night’s most competitive races came in District 32. Democrat Nicole Uhre-Balk earned the top spot, while Republican Steve Duffy captured the second seat. Republican Zachary Martin finished just behind Duffy, missing the election by fewer than 350 votes.
Republicans swept the District 33 race, with Curt Massie and Phil Jensen winning the district’s two House seats over Democrat Kari Hall.
The same outcome occurred in District 34, where Republicans Mike Derby and Becky Drury defeated Democrat Victor Diego Dominquez to claim both seats.
And in District 35, Republicans Jason Fleming and Dale Bartscher were elected, finishing ahead of Democrat Ken Jeakins.
Overall, Republicans won nine of the ten State House seats contested across Districts 27, 30, 32, 33, 34 and 35, with Democrat Nicole Uhre-Balk claiming the lone non-Republican victory. Independent Joe Flood also secured a seat in District 27.
Those results remain unofficial pending canvassing and certification by election officials.
