SPEARFISH, S.D. – A towering Black Hills spruce that has stood in a Spearfish yard for more than 30 years is headed to Pierre as South Dakota’s 2026 Capitol Christmas Tree.
The tree was planted by Sheila and Harold Baker after purchasing it as a small sapling from a local nursery. Over the decades, it grew to a size that eventually outgrew the family’s yard, prompting Sheila Baker to offer it as a gift to the state.
After a selection process that included measurements and inspections, the Baker-Cronin tree was chosen as this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree. Baker says the honor is especially meaningful during the nation’s 250th anniversary year and serves as a tribute to both the Baker and Cronin families, who have deep roots in military service and patriotism.
The massive spruce was cut down Tuesday and will make its way to Pierre, where it will be decorated and displayed for the holiday season, bringing together visitors from across South Dakota.
