RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rapid City officials are seeking more time to review public feedback before moving forward with proposed regulations for data centers.
The Planning Commission is expected to discuss the proposal Thursday, but city staff will recommend delaying a vote until Dec. 10 to allow for further review of suggested revisions. The city collected nearly 940 public survey responses and comments on issues including zoning, infrastructure impacts, and utility demands.
The proposed rules would add safeguards to regulations first adopted in 2024 as communities nationwide grapple with concerns about data centers and their effects on noise, power usage, and other local resources. If approved, the commission will continue discussions at its December meeting.
