With holiday decorating underway, the city’s Solid Waste Division is reminding residents to recycle nonworking Christmas lights and extension cords instead of throwing them away.
Discarded lights and cords can jam landfill equipment and cause costly delays. Collection bins for the annual Christmas Lights Recycling Program are available at 12 locations across Rapid City, including Ace Hardware, Boyd’s Drug Stores, City Hall, the public library, Runnings, Fleet Farm, Menards, RC Hardware, and the landfill office.
Bins will remain in place through Jan. 31. Last year, the program collected 3.4 tons of lights and cords; more than 14 tons have been recycled since 2020.
