The Black Hills Parks and Forests Association says it lost more than $105,000 in revenue during the 43-day federal government shutdown, forcing closures of its 16 retail stores at national parks and forests across the region.
The nonprofit relies on these sales for nearly 90 percent of its operating income, which funds educational programs such as Junior Ranger activities. Executive Director Patty Ressler said the loss threatens support for federal partners and community outreach.
To offset the shortfall, BHPFA has launched a year-end fundraising campaign with a $50,000 matching gift and opened a holiday market at its new Custer headquarters, running through Dec. 24.
