Meade County officials are preparing for a new state law requiring municipalities and school districts to hold elections on the same day as the county, giving local entities the option to combine their elections with the county. Officials say combining efforts can simplify voting by allowing residents in split precincts to use a single ballot.
At their Dec. 23 meeting, county commissioners set fees so local entities could decide whether to participate before the Jan. 14 deadline. The Black Hills Pioneer reports Piedmont, Summerset, the Meade School District, and the Rapid City School District plan to combine with the county. Several others will hold elections on the same date but manage them separately.
Summerset City Administrator Lisa Schieffer said combining elections boosts turnout and reduces voter inconvenience, though smaller entities worry about costs. Combining adds county expenses, including creating 62 additional ballot styles and covering legal notices and staffing.
For 2026, the county proposed fees ranging from a $2,500 minimum for smaller entities to $14,000 for the Meade School District—about $1 per registered voter. Commissioners approved the plan despite expected losses, saying the priority is making voting easier for residents.
