Before celebrating the New Year with fireworks, officials are reminding residents to follow local regulations. In Pennington County, fireworks may be discharged Dec. 27–Jan. 1 under state law, and residents are urged to clean up debris.
The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office is asking Rapid Valley residents to observe a voluntary 11 p.m. curfew, with extra patrols planned.
In Box Elder: Allowed Dec. 31 (9 p.m.)–Jan. 1 (1 a.m.); private property only; banned when fire danger is High.
In Hill City, Keystone and Wall: No fireworks are permitted. Only novelty items may be used.
New Underwood Allows fireworks Dec. 29–Jan. 1; may be restricted in dry years call 605‑754‑6777 for information.
In Rapid City No fireworks within city limits or within 1 mile; novelty items only.
No fireworks are permitted in the Black Hills Fire Protection District: sale and discharge prohibited.
City of Custer: No fireworks allowed.
Illegal fireworks use can result in fines up to $500, 30 days in jail, or both. Law enforcement will increase patrols around Rapid Valley and areas near Rapid City’s boundary to ensure safe celebrations.
