The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources has appointed Dr. Mendel Miller of Pierre as the state’s next State Veterinarian. He will also serve as executive director of the South Dakota Animal Industry Board.
Miller has been the state’s Assistant State Veterinarian since 2009, working under former state veterinarians Dr. Beth Thompson, Dr. Dustin Oedekoven, and Dr. Sam Holland. He succeeds Thompson in the role. Miller said he is grateful for the opportunity and for the mentorship he received from his predecessors.
Before joining the Animal Industry Board, Miller spent 13 years operating a mixed‑animal veterinary practice in Canton. He is a 1991 graduate of Kansas State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
The Animal Industry Board oversees the health and safety of South Dakota’s livestock and helps ensure the safety of the state’s meat supply.
