The South Dakota National Guard welcomed home the Rapid City‑based 109th Engineer Battalion on Sunday, Jan. 11, celebrating the return of roughly 50 soldiers after a 13‑month deployment to the U.S. southern border.
During the ceremony at the Range Road Armory, leaders praised the battalion’s work supporting Joint Task Force–Southern Border. Lt. Col. Michael Roselles said the unit helped disrupt human‑smuggling operations, safeguarded hundreds of unaccompanied minors, and assisted in major narcotics seizures. A Border Patrol agent told him the 109th “did an exceptional job” strengthening border security.
Maj. Gen. Mark Morrell and Gov. Larry Rhoden commended the soldiers’ professionalism and resilience, noting the demanding nature of the mission. Rhoden said visiting the unit at the border last May underscored the scale of their responsibility.
Officials also recognized the vital support of families, employers, and community partners. U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds, U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, and Rapid City Mayor Jason Salamun attended the event.
