A Rapid City woman is facing multiple charges after police say she caused a three‑vehicle crash Sunday afternoon before attempting to walk away from the scene.
Officers were dispatched around 2:40 p.m. to the intersection of Haines Avenue and Anamosa Street for a report of a collision. When they arrived, they found two damaged vehicles in the roadway and a silver Mazda that had left the street and come to rest on a nearby retaining wall.
Witnesses told officers they saw the Mazda’s driver—later identified as 27‑year‑old Veronica Perez of Rapid City—climb out of the vehicle and walk away immediately after the crash. Police located her a short time later.
Inside the Mazda, officers found a used can of air duster that was still cold to the touch. After interviewing witnesses, investigators determined the Mazda had run a red light at a high rate of speed, struck a Chevrolet SUV, and pushed it into a Jeep Cherokee before veering off the roadway.
Police conducted a DUI investigation and concluded Perez was too impaired to drive safely. She was arrested on several charges, including DUI, Reckless Driving, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal, Driving Under Suspension, No Proof of Insurance, and a Probation Hold.
Perez was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
