Lawmakers return to Pierre today to kick off the 2026 South Dakota legislative session, launching the first day of work at the Capitol.
The Joint Committee on Appropriations will start the morning with an overview of the proposed 2027 state budget before legislators move into early organizational business and initial budget reviews.
At noon mountain time, Gov. Larry Rhoden is scheduled to deliver his State of the State address, outlining his agenda for the session.
The Legislature will meet for 38 days this year, with all 105 seats up for election. Committee hearings and bill debates are expected to ramp up later in the week as lawmakers move past opening‑day procedures.
