Authorities have released the names of the two people killed in a single‑vehicle rollover crash late Saturday on U.S. Highway 385, about 10 miles north of Hill City.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol confirmed that Echo Orion Calatrello, 22, of Sturgis, and Nicholas Lord Jackson, Jr., 22, of Deadwood, both died after the 2003 Toyota 4Runner they were in left the roadway around 10:12 p.m. on January 10. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.
According to preliminary information, the southbound SUV drifted off the right shoulder near mile marker 92. The driver over‑corrected, causing the vehicle to roll multiple times before coming to rest in the east ditch. Both Calatrello and Jackson were ejected and died from their injuries at the scene.
Investigators have not yet determined which of the two was driving at the time of the crash.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate. Officials noted that all details released so far remain preliminary.
