Residents across western South Dakota and northeast Wyoming are being urged to prepare for dangerous wind conditions as a High Wind Warning goes into effect late this morning and continues through midnight Friday.
Forecasters say northwest winds of 35 to 55 mph, with gusts reaching 60 to 80 mph, are expected. The strongest winds are anticipated from midnight tonight through Friday afternoon, creating hazardous conditions across the region.
The warning covers portions of northwestern and southwestern South Dakota as well as northeast Wyoming.
Officials caution that winds of this strength can topple large trees, damage roofs and small structures, and lead to scattered power outages. Travel may become difficult, particularly for high‑profile vehicles, and blowing dust could reduce visibility. Flying debris is also a concern.
Emergency managers advise residents to secure outdoor items, use caution if traveling, and stay alert for falling branches or other hazards.
