At its January meeting, the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission reviewed the department’s progress on updating the state’s Elk Management Plan, including the development of a new Elk Management Action Plan.
During the discussion, commissioners raised the question of whether additional opportunities to draw an elk license could be created by adjusting the elk population objective in the Black Hills. The current target range is 6,000 to 8,000 elk.
To explore this idea, the department is now seeking feedback from stakeholders and the public on potentially increasing the upper population objective to 9,000, contingent on habitat and range conditions.
Comments and suggestions for the Elk Management Action Plan may be submitted through February 17.
