The federal government remains in a partial shutdown this morning after Congress failed to finalize a full-year budget before Friday’s deadline. The Senate passed a large funding package, along with a two‑week extension for Homeland Security, the House returns to Washington today. SD Congressman Dusty Johnson believes the house will get the deal done to avoid a long-term shutdown.
The shutdown stems largely from a standoff over immigration enforcement and Department of Homeland Security funding, following recent federal‑agent‑involved shootings in Minneapolis that derailed negotiations. Democrats have demanded reforms to ICE policies before backing long‑term funding, while Republicans argue the government needs to stay open as talks continue. Johnson believes things are moving in the right direction.
Essential services—including military operations, TSA, Border Patrol, and federal law enforcement—continue to operate without pay until a final agreement is reached, while many other agencies remain funded through previously approved appropriations.
House Speaker Mike Johnson says he expects the House to act on the deal by Tuesday.
