Meade County Sheriff Pat West said Tuesday Calls for service to the Meade County Sheriff’s Office have doubled in three years, rising from 10,875 in 2022 to 21,530 in 2025. The increase has been steady—13,000 calls in 2023 and 18,000 in 2024—and while part of the jump may stem from improved reporting since West took office in 2023, he said the numbers show calls are “going through the roof.”
West said both criminal activity and civil process work are driving the surge. Deputies attempted 3,233 civil paper services in 2025, up from 2,578 the year before. Civil service generated about $100,000, and housing inmates brought in $535,000, for nearly $950,000 total revenue.
Most calls originate along the I‑90 corridor, where most of the county’s population and visitors are concentrated. Rural communities typically see fewer incidents, officials said. Despite the roughly 100% increase in workload, staffing levels have not grown at the same pace.
West said 2026 has already begun with a heavy caseload, including aggravated assaults, burglaries and an attempted murder.
