Gov. Larry Rhoden on Monday signed two bills designed to bolster South Dakota’s emergency medical services, saying the measures will give frontline responders added protection and flexibility as they serve communities across the state.
The first measure, House Bill 1023, creates liability protections and sets new requirements for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses who serve on ambulance crews. Supporters say the change will help rural services fill staffing gaps while ensuring qualified personnel can assist in emergencies without additional legal risk.
The second bill, House Bill 1024, updates the state’s requirements for ambulance operators, a move aimed at modernizing regulations and supporting operational stability for EMS providers.
Rhoden signed the bills alongside members of the Emergency Medical Services Interim Committee, the bills’ prime sponsor, and other EMS advocates. A photo of the signing was provided by the governor’s office.
