The state House Health and Human Services Committee today (Tuesday, Feb. 10) defeated a bill that would’ve required licenses and background checks for non-medical home care providers.
District 7 state Rep. Mellissa Heermann, R-Brookings was the sponsor of House Bill 1138 and said this would’ve protected seniors who rely on non-medical home care assistance…
District 3 state Rep. Brandei Schaefbauer, R-Aberdeen said this is too much government regulation…
HB 1138 was introduced Tuesday morning and — due to some committee absences at the time — failed to achieve enough votes to either pass or be defeated. The bill was brought back to the committee late Tuesday afternoon with an amendment to address lawmaker’s misgivings.
District 5 state Rep. Josephine Garcia, R-Watertown said the bill still wasn’t ready for passage…
The committee voted 8-5 to kill the bill by sending it to the 41st legislative day.
