A resolution to place mobile sports betting on South Dakota’s November ballot cleared the Senate on Wednesday. Sponsored by Sen. Casey Crabtree, the measure would amend the state constitution to allow residents to wager on sports from anywhere in South Dakota, with bets routed through licensed Deadwood casinos.
Crabtree said the proposal could generate new revenue and provide property tax relief, with the resolution requiring 90% of tax revenue to go toward that purpose.
Opponents, including Sen. Kevin Jensen, questioned whether lawmakers could deliver meaningful tax relief, arguing the Legislature has yet to solve the issue even without expanded gambling.
South Dakotans currently travel to Iowa and Wyoming to place mobile bets. Voters approved sports wagering in Deadwood in 2020.
The measure, SJR 504, passed the Senate 23–10, with two excused, and now heads to the House, where Rep. Greg Jamison is the lead sponsor.
