Sequitor Edge plans to build a 30,000‑square‑foot modular data center in the Black Hills Industrial Center near Highway 79, with land closing expected in March and construction set to begin by late summer. The project is designed to scale over time on a 10‑acre site.
CEO Dan Fuhrman said the company chose Rapid City for its collaborative business climate. The center will operate as an edge‑computing facility, processing data closer to users to improve speed and reliability for regional industries.
The facility will start with 2 megawatts of power, expandable to 10, and use a closed‑loop cooling system requiring only about 20,000 gallons of water, far below large hyperscale centers. It will create three high‑skill jobs averaging $100,000 annually and serve businesses within a 100‑mile radius.
Black Hills Energy officials said the center’s energy use will resemble that of a grocery or big‑box store, not a massive data campus. Community groups have also welcomed the center’s lower water and power demands compared to industry norms.
Sequitor Edge plans similar centers across 11 states, including one in Brookings. Regional partners, including Elevate Rapid City and Dream Design, helped coordinate the project.
