ORIGINAL STORY:
The Silver Mountain Fire burning roughly two miles south of Rockerville, has reached 50% containment as of about 9pm Wednesday evening. The fire has been GPS‑mapped at 67 acres.
Earlier in the day, the fire was estimated at 20 acres after being reported around 11:30 a.m. Along with the South Dakota Wildland Fire Division, federal crews and local volunteer fire departments have been working together to halt forward progression.
There are no evacuation orders and no road closures at this time. However, Highway 16 is experiencing heavy smoke, which officials say could continue through today.
A burnout operation is scheduled to help secure the fire’s edge and reduce the chance of further spread. A fire investigator is also on scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
