South Dakota health officials say influenza activity continues to climb, with 10,795 confirmed flu cases reported so far in the 2025–2026 season, according to the state’s Influenza Dashboard. The dashboard is updated weekly and tracks the respiratory season that began October 4, 2025.
A mid-season update released this week shows the state has recorded 609 hospitalizations and 14 flu-related deaths. While still significant, health officials say this year’s totals remain slightly below the historical seasonal average, which typically includes about 12,500 cases and nearly 700 hospitalizations.
Last year’s flu season was far more severe, ending with more than 21,000 cases and 65 deaths statewide. Officials continue urging vaccination and early treatment for those at high risk of complications.
The latest flu statistics can be found on the South Dakota Department of Health’s Influenza Dashboard.
