Black Hills National Forest officials plan to proceed today with a prescribed burn in the Anti-Horse project area after re-evaluating conditions. The burn site is about 18 miles west of Custer and 5 miles west of Jewel Cave National Monument.
A second burn is planned today on the Bearlodge Ranger District in northeast Wyoming, pending final approvals. Crews expect to treat roughly 80 acres about one mile southeast of Warren Peak.
No closures are anticipated, but the public is asked to avoid both areas and watch for warning signs. Fire crews will only ignite the burns if all safety and weather requirements are met.
Smoke may be visible, and air quality updates are available at fire.airnow.gov. Drivers should slow down and use headlights if they encounter smoke. Weather will be reassessed before ignition, and either burn may be canceled if conditions change.
Updates will be posted on the Black Hills National Forest website and social media, and county emergency managers will be notified when burning begins.
