Fire crews continue working the Grey Rocks Fire, burning just south of Custer, after the wildfire grew to about 58 acres. As of Monday afternoon, the fire reached 75% containment, with firefighters strengthening and cooling interior hotspots.
The fire began Sunday near the Custer County Airport, moving quickly through grass and timber near nearby homes before firefighters secured a perimeter. Local, state and federal crews—along with volunteer departments from across the region—responded to the fire.
Officials note that the area remains under a Red Flag Warning, with critically dry fuels, humidity dropping into the teens, and wind gusts forecast to exceed 60 mph, conditions that continue to challenge containment efforts.
Crews remain on scene, working toward full containment. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
