The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for much of western and south‑central South Dakota and parts of northeast Wyoming for today, with critical fire weather conditions expected from late morning through early evening.
Forecasters say very dry air and strong westerly winds—sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 55–60 mph—will combine with low humidity levels dropping to around 15%, creating an extreme wildfire risk across the Black Hills, the Badlands, Pine Ridge, Fall River County, Haakon County, Tripp County and surrounding areas.
The warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Officials warn that the mix of dry fuels, low humidity and powerful winds could lead to rapid fire spread. Residents are urged to avoid any activities that could spark a fire and to remain alert to changing conditions.
