The South Dakota Senate on Wednesday again rejected Sen. Chris Karr’s plan to make the temporary 4.2% sales tax permanent. After a 17–17 tie on Tuesday, the bill failed 16–17 on reconsideration.
The defeat leaves the rate scheduled to return to 4.5% in July 2027. Sen. Red Dawn Foster, who supported the bill Tuesday, switched to a no vote. Sen. Mike Rohl, a previous no, was absent.
Karr suggested Tuesday’s tie may have been due to a long day, but his remarks were cut short on a point of order. His proposal is now dead for the session.
