Rapid City officials will open a 50‑year‑old time capsule on Friday as part of the city’s 150th anniversary celebration.
The capsule, buried in 1976 during construction of the Milo Barber Transportation Center, will be unearthed at 1:30 p.m. in front of the building at 333 Sixth Street. Mayor Jason Salamun will unveil its contents during a community open house from 2–4 p.m. at City Hall.
City departments and the Journey Museum will display historical photos, documents, and memorabilia. A vintage fire engine and police car will also be on display outside City Hall.
As part of the anniversary events, the city plans to bury a new 50‑year time capsule on May 29 at Founders Park. A community photo taken May 22 at Main Street Square will be included.
Other events this week include the Founder’s Day Exhibit at the Journey Museum on Wednesday, a Turtle Soup history session on Friday, a Black Hills Symphony performance next Saturday, and ongoing historical displays at The Monument.
