After a bipartisan plan died in the House last week, Democrats blamed Republican infighting for killing the bill.
House Democrat Eric Muckey of Sioux Falls said House Bill 13-08-B was the most promising option lawmakers had.
House Majority Leader Scott Odenbach of Spearfish acknowledged that meaningful property tax cuts are within reach.
However, he said any plan forces a hard choice on spending or revenue.
Lawmakers have about eight working days left in the session to put a property tax package together.
