A rockfall mitigation project is set to begin today, on S.D. Highway 44 across from the Cleghorn Springs State Fish Hatchery in Rapid City, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
Traffic will remain open throughout the project, but both lanes will be restricted to 16 feet in width. Crews will implement temporary lane closures as needed for rock scaling and excavation work on the hillside.
Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. while workers remove loose rock and debris. During those closures, traffic will be controlled by flaggers.
The project also includes installation of a rockfall fence to reduce the risk of future incidents.
Midwest Rockfall Inc. of Denver is the prime contractor for the $2.3 million project. Work is expected to be completed by July 2026.
