The South Dakota Department of Public Safety has revoked all active burn permits effective immediately, ending the pile‑burn season more than two weeks early. Officials say ongoing wildfires, dry conditions and pressure on firefighting resources prompted the action.
State officials urge anyone who has recently conducted a pile burn to revisit those sites and make sure all debris is fully extinguished. They advise using water and turning over material to eliminate any remaining heat, warning that even small hotspots can reignite under current conditions.
DPS is also reminding the public to stay aware of fire danger and to follow all local fire restrictions as crews continue to respond to active wildfires.
