With two weeks left for candidates to file petitions, South Dakota’s June 2 primary ballot is already shaping up with 13 Senate primaries and 13 House primaries for seats in the Legislature. More contests may emerge before the March 31 filing deadline. Absentee voting begins April 17.
In 2024, primary races were numerous and often contentious, with several incumbents losing after voting for a CO₂ pipeline bill later blocked by voters. Some of those same matchups are returning this year.
Filing for Senate Primaries are:
- District 30: Sen. John Carley vs. William Meirose.
• District 32: Sen. Helene Duhamel vs. Karen McNeal (general‑election rematch).
• District 33: Sen. Curt Voight vs. former Sen. David Johnson.
• District 34: Sen. Taffy Howard vs. Jason Green (rematch).
House Primaries will feature races including:
- District 29: Reps. Kathy Rice, Terri Jorgenson, and former Rep. Gary Cammack.
• District 30: Reps. Trish Ladner and Tim Goodwin, and Stephen Saint.
• District 33: Reps. Curt Massie and Phil Jensen, and Jeff Marlette.
• District 34: Reps. Mike Derby and Heather Baxter, and former Rep. Becky Drury.
