South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has joined 12 other attorneys general in suing OneMain Financial, accusing the company of misleading borrowers and packing loans with costly, unwanted add‑on products.
Jackley said South Dakotans have been charged for “senseless” insurance policies and services they never agreed to. OneMain operates branches in Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Watertown; the number of affected customers in the state is still unknown.
The lawsuit claims OneMain used a bait‑and‑switch approach by hiding add‑on products, rushing consumers through loan signings, pre‑loading contracts with extra charges, and burying disclosures in lengthy fine print. It also alleges the company pushed refinances that added more hidden costs.
Attorneys general from Colorado, Maryland, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin have joined the case.
