The South Dakota Department of Corrections says 69‑year‑old inmate Perfecto Benal died Wednesday in the infirmary at the Mike Durfee State Prison in Springfield.
Benal was serving a Pennington County sentence for possession of a controlled substance.
His death marks the third in the state prison system this year and the second reported in March.
