A 92-year-old Piedmont man died Friday evening in a four-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 14A about one mile east of Deadwood, according to the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 8:04 p.m. Friday, March 27, at mile marker 43. Authorities said the man was driving a 2019 Chevrolet Suburban eastbound when the vehicle crossed the centerline and sideswiped an oncoming 2010 Ford Flex. The impact caused the Ford Flex to spin and come to rest on the centerline.
The Suburban then collided head-on with an oncoming 2020 Ford F-150, sending the pickup off the roadway and into a ditch. The Suburban subsequently struck a 2005 GMC Sierra before coming to rest in the westbound passing lane, officials said.
The driver of the Suburban was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Ford F-150, both from Rapid City, were transported to Monument Health in Rapid City with serious injuries, one of which was described as life-threatening. The driver and a 2-year-old passenger in the Ford Flex, both from Lead, were not injured, nor was the driver of the GMC Sierra, a Deadwood man.
The name of the man who died has not been released pending notification of family members. Seat belt use by one passenger remains under investigation.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash. All information released is preliminary.
