The South Dakota Department of Health reported two additional influenza-related deaths, along with 23 new hospitalizations and 468 new cases in its latest update.
So far during the 2025–26 flu season, the state has recorded 27 deaths, 940 hospitalizations, and 17,191 confirmed cases.
Health officials say influenza activity is declining, with the season peaking around Feb. 2. While the virus continues to circulate, the number of cases is trending downward statewide.
Most people recover from the flu within 48 hours with rest and fluids, according to health officials. However, children, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions remain at higher risk for severe illness.
The Department of Health recommends routine immunizations and frequent handwashing as the most effective ways to prevent the spread of influenza.
