The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Tuesday, March 31, in Sioux Falls.
The investigation was requested by the Sioux Falls Police Department. The Attorney Generals Office said DCI will conduct an independent review and issue a final report once all facts are gathered.
Police were attempting to locate 36-year-old Richard Paul Olson Jr., who was wanted by federal authorities for violating probation related to a firearms conviction. Officers with the Sioux Falls Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit found Olson at a gas station, where he exited a vehicle and later produced a weapon. Two officers fired their weapons, and a firearm believed to have been in Olson’s possession was recovered at the scene.
Olson attempted to flee but was apprehended by a police service dog and sustained injuries from dog bites. No one was injured by gunfire.
DCI will process the scene, review evidence and video, and interview those involved. The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and South Dakota Highway Patrol are assisting. This marks the second officer-involved shooting in South Dakota this year.
