A Rapid City man pleaded guilty Tuesday to multiple felony charges stemming from a shooting and burglary in October 2024.
Travis Chipps, 19, before Circuit Court Judge Jeffery Connolly and entered guilty pleas to aggravated assault, first‑degree burglary, and assault with bodily fluids, commonly referred to as sliming, related to an incident at the Pennington County Jail.
Chipps was originally indicted on a charge of attempted first‑degree murder for shooting a man on Oct. 4, 2024 when authorities were called that morning to the 4200 block of Apple Tree Road after a wounded man was found knocking on doors seeking help. Investigators later determined the shooting occurred at a different location. The victim was hospitalized and later listed in stable condition.
During the investigation, officers also responded to a reported attempted burglary later that evening in the 6200 block of East Highway 44. Prosecutors said the shooting and burglary occurred at separate times that day.
Under a plea agreement, the state agreed to dismiss remaining charges and recommend a 15‑year prison sentence, though the judge may impose a lesser or greater sentence. Chipps faces a potential combined maximum sentence of 42 years if the court imposes consecutive terms.
His next court appearance is scheduled for May 5th.
