Flags on all city-owned property in Sturgis will be flown at half-staff in honor of former Mayor Kevin Forrester, who died Easter Sunday, April 5, at age 58.
In a proclamation issued Monday, Mayor Pro Tempore Tony Dargatz praised Forrester’s leadership, integrity, and long service to the community, directing that flags remain at half-staff until the day after his memorial service. Meade County commissioners issued a similar proclamation for county-owned property.
Forrester resigned as mayor on March 23 due to health concerns after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in fall 2025. He became mayor in October 2024 after the resignation of Angela Wilkinson and ran unopposed in the April 2025 election.
A lifelong Sturgis resident, Forrester served 28 years with Meade County as facilities manager and IT director and also served as city councilor, county auditor, and chairman of the Bureau of Land Management Resource Advisory Council. He was widely known for leading infrastructure and technology improvements and for his advocacy of outdoor recreation and trail development, including founding K4 Trails.
The City of Sturgis and Meade County have also proclaimed June 10 as “Kevin Forrester Day” to honor his legacy. Memorial service details are expected to be announced soon.
Forrester is survived by his wife, Nicole, three sons, and two sisters.
